Memory loss is not an “old person” problem.

The Cheat Sheet:
- What was The AoC’s first TV appearance?
- How many cases of Alzheimer’s today were possibly preventable?
- True or false: the human brain at rest uses as much energy as a leg running a marathon.
- Diabesity: what is it and what causes it?
- What percentage of your brain is fat and why is that relevant to your diet?
- And so much more…
Is there really a correlation between what we eat and how our brains function? And can we take steps now to prevent diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia later in life, or are they simply part of growing old?
Joining us to talk about his documentary Bread Head which explores all of these questions is Max Lugavere. We’ll get into all of that, and more on this bonus episode of The Art of Charm.

More About This Show:
At first glance Max is probably not the person you’d expect to be exploring the topic of Alzheimer’s and preventing cognitive decline. He’s in his early 30s and doesn’t have any kind of medical or health-related career. In fact he began his journey as a producer for the now-defunct Current television network and then ventured into the music world.
The TV work and his musical experiences gave him the know-how and production chops to make his latest venture possible. Bread Head is a documentary he’s creating about the link between brain health and what we eat.
But why would a young, successful TV producer and musician make a documentary film about brain health, nutrition and Alzheimer’s? Because it hit home for him.
When she was just 59 his mom started to show signs of cognitive decline. He didn’t realize memory loss and related disorders could affect someone so young, but it did in his own family tree. So he tapped into his existing interests in nutrition, health and science to explore the potential impact of what we eat on how our brains function.
On today’s show we get into what medicine is now telling us about the negative impact of carbs and sugar are on our bodies, including our brains. We touch on several other subjects, but an important one to mention here is what we can do to give ourselves the healthiest brains possible.
A few suggestions Max has are to alter our diet, increase our exercise, and incorporate intermittent fasting into our daily lives. When it comes to our diet, Max says to cut out carbs and sugar and add healthy fats back in. We need extremely low levels of insulin resistance and healthy fats for our brains to be at their peak.
Exercise plays a pivotal role in keeping our minds healthy. By adding some aerobic exercise we’re giving our brains what they need to make more healthy brain cells in the hippocampus (the part of the brain where memory is stored and the first area to be affected when we suffer from Alzheimer’s).
And last, Max recommends intermittent fasting. This is a topic we’ve touched on during previous episodes but it means we limit the hours we eat during a regular day. Instead of eating from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m., we should stop eating four hours before bed and then wait a few hours after we wake up before eating breakfast.
Max gives us the science and latest medical evidence to back up his recommendations. It’s worth your time to check it out and start making changes now to save your brain later. Big thanks to him for that knowledge and thank you for joining us, we’ll see you next time on The Art of Charm.
THANKS, MAX LUGAVERE!
