Why You Need to Keep Your New Year’s Resolution to Work Out

A lot of people pooh-pooh the New Year’s resolution. “Why not just start now?” they say. However, we at The Art of Charm are big fans of the New Year’s resolution, if only because they get people doing things to positively impact their lives that they might otherwise not do. Case in point: Working out.

A lot of men make a New Year’s resolution to start working out, but very few stick with it. However, sticking with it is what it’s all about. These are four reasons you should keep your New Year’s Resolution when you “don’t feel like” working out.

health clubYou’ll Feel Great

This is one of the biggest reasons that you need to work out on the regular: You’re going to feel great. Not only will you have a sense of accomplishment that comes with getting something done, you’ll also release endorphins that will pick you up even on your worst days. In this regard, it doesn’t matter much what you do, it just matters that you do something and stick to a schedule.

You’ll Look Great

Of course, this is the reason that most men want to work out: They want to look better than they do presently. One downside is that you’re not going to see results immediately, but a lot of men might start seeing some results in the short term, especially if you’re trying to keep your New Year’s resolution to “work out more” and not “start working out.”

One thing that we at The Art of Charm recommend in this regard is that you not be afraid to pat yourself on the back. Working out is hard and if you’ve done it and see changes — even minor ones — go ahead and cheerlead a little bit.

It’s Less Optional As You Get Older

Ask any old guy: One of the first things to go when you start aging is your muscles. This can lead to a number of serious health problems, including the dreaded bad back. There’s no two ways about it: Aging can be a real pain. Don’t make it any worse than it has to be. Think of regular exercise as a retirement plan for your body.

It Makes It Easier to Keep Other Resolutions

Did you plan to quit smoking this year? Not only will exercise help you burn off some of the stress of quitting, it will also provide you with a regular reminder of why you need to quit. Want to cut back on the drinking? Knowing that you’re heading off to the gym with your gym buddy (and you should have a gym buddy) in the morning will help you to lay off the sauce. No matter what you’re trying to cut out of your life, regular exercise can help you to do it.

Make this year the year that you keep your New Year’s resolution to work out. If you’ve fallen off and backslid a bit, use this opportunity to get back on the horse. You have every reason to do it and only a ton of excuses to quit.
