Minisode Monday #34 | How to Find a Mentor

Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable — to make you more magnetic and effective — that you can implement right away.

Last time he was on the podcast, Jon Acuff shared something he called the notecard exercise for people who wonder how to find good mentors.

Let’s get to it!

The Cheat Sheet:

  • Gather a big stack of 3×5 cards. You’re going to write down one person per notecard. [00:43]
  • Ask yourself these questions. [00:52]
  • You’ll probably end up with a huge stack of cards — or, at the very least, a good starting point. [01:31]
  • The purpose of this exercise is to illustrate that you have so many options that don’t often come to mind, and now you’ve got some contacts to get the ball rolling. [02:00]
  • You can also arrange the cards on a board and reach out to your contacts one by one to see what unfolds. [02:18]

Jordan Harbinger has spent several years abroad in Europe and the developing world, including South America, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East, and speaks several languages. He has also worked for various governments and NGOs overseas, traveled through war zones, and been kidnapped -- twice. He’ll tell you the only reason he’s still alive and kicking is because of his ability to talk his way into (and out of) just about any type of situation. Here at The Art of Charm, Jordan shares that experience, and the system borne as a result, with students and clients.
