Sure, it takes work, but so doesn’t anything else in life. The good news is that when you start a new life, the process is often as fun and enriching as the final result.

Start a New Life, Step 1: Decide Who You Want to Be

To learn how to start a new life, you first have to decide what that new life is going to look like. You have to decide who you want to be. How do you do that? It’s simple. Sit down, without any distractions and start writing out what your dream life would look like. Don’t stop there, though. Dig deeper. Ask yourself why you want the things that you want. For example, if you want money, ask yourself why you want money. What does it represent to you?

Once you’ve completed a picture of what you want your life to look like, it’s time to start putting it into practice.

Start a New Life, Step 2: Learning New Habits

It’s an oft-repeated maxim that it takes 30 days to form a new habit. What this means is that you can start a new life in 30 days. How do you do that? One thing that works for a lot of people is using the clock. Since we live in the age of smart phones, you can use calendar apps and alarms on your phone to help you start a new life. Set alarms and put up calendar notifications for starting the habits that you want to bring into your new life. Then, follow through.

Start a New Life, Step 3: Unlearn Old Habits

Tired of doing certain things? Unlearning old habits might just be the hardest part of starting the new life that you want. Some guys use the old rubber band on the wrist trick, but we’re more into carrot than stick. Reward yourself when you follow through on eliminating old habits. Give yourself a metaphorical pat on the back or even treat yourself to something nice when you reach milestones. For that matter, don’t feel like you have to beat yourself any time that you back slide. Remember, this is a long process, starting a new life, and it’s not going to happen overnight.

Start a New Life, Step 4: Challenge Yourself

At a certain point, following through on your habits and going after the ones you don’t like will become too easy. It will be old hat. Part of your new life should always be challenging yourself, looking for the next horizon that you want to cross, the next peak that you want to scale. Challenging yourself feels good, especially when you’re able to achieve things that you never thought possible. This is probably the coolest part of starting a new life — stretching yourself and going beyond.
